Septic System FAQ

1. How does RID-X® work?

RID-X® Septic Tank System Treatment contains billions of 100% natural active bacteria and enzymes to break down household waste. By adding RID-X®, you help restore the delicate balance of beneficial bacterial and enzymes needed to help keep your system operating at full efficiency. Each box and bottle of RID-X® contains the following ingredients scientifically proven to break down household waste:

  • Cellulase breaks down toilet paper, vegetable matter and some foods
  • Lipase breaks down fats, oils and grease
  • Protease breaks down proteins
  • Amylase breaks down starches

2. How soon does RID-X® begin work?

The enzymes in RID-X® begin working as soon as they come in contact with water. The bacteria take 2-4 hours to germinate and then begin to break down solid waste. If the temperature and conditions are favorable, then the bacteria will multiply to the maximum level that the environment will allow in about 2-4 days. Since septic systems vary, the speed at which the bacteria and enzymes break down waste varies.

3. What steps can I take to help prolong the life of my septic system?

Watch what you put down your drains. Taking long showers and doing extra loads of laundry can flush beneficial bacteria out of your septic system. Use RID-X® to add
beneficial bacteria and enzymes that help maintain your system.

4. Which product is better to use – Gelpacs, Powder or Liquid?

All three products are formulated to have the same amount of active ingredients, and are equally effective.

5. Will RID-X® unclog my drain/pipes/toilet?

No, however, when used regularly, RID-X® liquid can help break down organic build-up in your pipes, to help prevent clogs before they happen.

6. If my home has 2 or more bathrooms, do I have to use RID-X® in each one?

No, either pour RID-X® down one drain or toilet or flush a RID-X® Septi-Pac down one toilet.

7. If RID-X® is used in the morning and the toilet has been flushed all day, will the product still be effective or does more need to be added?

If you use RID-X® right before actively using your plumbing, it will not be necessary to add more later in the day. However, RID-X® is most effective if used before long periods of plumbing inactivity, such as before going to bed or right before you leave for work. This will allow the product to settle into the bottom of the tank to attack solid waste and to reduce the risk of being flushed out.

8. Can RID-X® be used with:

9. If I use RID-X®, will I still have to have my septic tank pumped?

Yes, the average recommended time between septic tank pumpings is 2–3 years, depending on the rate of sediment build-up, family size, and other factors. Used regularly, RID-X® helps break down the solid waste in your septic tank. This may slow the accumulation of solid waste in the tank.

10. How can I find out the size of my tank?

Septic tanks serving a single household can range in size from 500 gallons (for older systems) to 2,000 gallons or more. Residential septic systems installed after 1990 have a mandated minimum tank size of 1,000 gallons. The size of your tank is generally a function of the number of bedrooms in your house. See the chart below for current septic tank sizing guidelines by number of bedrooms. Notice that for homes with more than 3 bedrooms, each additional bedroom requires an additional 250 gallons of tank capacity.
